Many Dominican Hospitals are equipped to handle 1,500 births per year but are often faced with over 13,000 births per year. They lack the skilled staff and supplies to ensure birth is safe and peaceful.
In Ecuador the maternal and infant death rate is much lower than other developing nations, but their high cesarean rate, often over 85%, comes with its own detriment to national health. The World Health Organization states that for optimal maternal child health, the cesarean rate should be no more than 15%. Skilled Midwives are the key to lowering the cesarean rate and improving lifelong health.
Each year in Ethiopia, over 22,000 women die a childbirth related death. The lifetime risk of maternal death is 1 in 27. In addition, more than half a million women suffer from pregnancy-related disabilities.
The infant mortality rate is 59 deaths per 1000 live births, while the overall under-five mortality rate is 88 per 1000 live births. A total of 67% of all deaths of children aged under 5 years in Ethiopia take place before a child’s first birthday.
